Welcome
to the 2007 ACEEE Summer Study in Industry!
July 2427, 2007 Renaissance Westchester
Hotel White Plains, New York
The
2007 ACEEE Summer Study is the 8th biennial ACEEE conference
on Energy Efficiency in Industry. Participants from around
the world will gather for three days to discuss technical,
policy, and program issues related to increasing energy
efficiency in industry. Presentations and discussions
will relate to the theme, Improving Industrial Competitiveness:
Adapting to Volatile Energy Markets, Globalization, and
Environmental Constraints. Attendees will include
energy decision makers from industry, equipment manufacturers,
government policymakers, electric utility staff, energy
consultants, leading industrial energy researchers, and
academics.
The cost of energy is an increasingly large component
of U.S. manufacturing cost. Factoring in energy conservation
and substitution strategies and the need to operate
manufacturing plants as sustainable enterprises, it
becomes clear that both industry and energy markets
must adapt to assure a sound U.S. economy. The 2007
ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Industry
will offer opportunities to learn about a wide variety
of cutting-edge energy strategies, technologies, measures,
programs, and policies that cut energy costs, improve
energy reliability, reduce energy price volatility,
and enhance industrial productivity. Come to Summer
Study to learn from and network with energy experts
from private industry, academia, government, consulting,
and the nonprofit sector.

Conference
Program
Opening Plenary
ACEEE's Industrial Program Director, R. Neal Elliott, discusses America's Energy Straightjacket.
Closing Plenary
Bill Reinhardt of NYSERDA discusses Oil Depletion and the Future of Globalization.
Display
Sessions
Displays
will be available for viewing throughout the Summer
Study. Display presentations will be made during a Wednesday
afternoon Display Reception.
Informal
Sessions
Participant-organized sessions will be held in the afternoons.
These informal sessions will allow further discussion
of the presentations and other topics of importance
to participants. Session topics may be posted on ACEEE's
Web site
or at the Summer Study. Meeting rooms will be assigned
on-site. The list of informal sessions will be updated
and distributed daily to attendees.
Site
Tours
Tours
highlighting energy issues are planned for the afternoon
of July 26th, departing from the hotel between 1:00
and 1:30. Some site visits will be of projects co-sponsored
by NYSERDA. Participants may sign up on-site at registration.

Panels
Papers and poster/display presentations will be accepted
in the following panel areas:
|
1. |
Energy
Markets and Global Competition
Panel Leaders: John A. "Skip" Laitner,
American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy;
Joseph Roop, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
This Panel will assess the current state of energy
supply and demand for each major energy type (e.g.,
renewable, nuclear, and fossil), and will project
what the supply and demand picture for each energy
type may be two decades from now as present policy
and R & D play out. Presenters will discuss
the impact of the current and future scenarios
on competitiveness of major energy-using industries
and on greenhouse gas emissions. |
|
2. |
Energy-Saving
Technologies and Practices
Panel Leaders: Frederick J. Carranti, Syracuse University;
Ahmad Ganji, San Francisco State University
What is state-of-the-art in industrial energy
efficiency technologies? Have higher energy prices
made formerly marginal cost-effective measures
more attractive? Are the opportunities for improving
efficiency in manufacturing facilities larger
than ever? This Panel will assess the state-of-the-art
practices and technologies for improving industrial
energy efficiency including benchmarking, system
optimization, and new methods to identify or sustain
savings opportunities. New technologies and applications
that facilitate industrial energy efficiency will
also be presented. |
|
3. |
Environmental
Constraints and Opportunities
Panel Leaders: Heather Holsinger, Pew Center for
Climate Change; Dana Levy, New York State Energy
Research and Development Authority
This Panel will address the key questions: What
are the opportunities to dramatically reduce greenhouse
gas emissions which can be undertaken without
constraining the U.S. economy? Are they policy-
and/or technology-related? Is the "hydrogen
economy" the panacea? Presenters will offer
analysis based on ideas and examples of the society/industries
cooperating to create sustainable local and regional
environments. |
|
4. |
Analysis
and Modeling of Industrial Energy Use
Panel Leaders: Chris Bataille, Simon Fraser University;
TBA
What are the current projected industrial energy
use scenarios? How can we best analyze industrial
energy use, processes, and trends? How can we
quantify the benefits of industrial energy efficiency?
Improved modeling and analysis techniques are
critical to increased understanding of virtually
all areas of industrial energy use. This Panel
will showcase the use of data and modeling of
processes, operations, plants, and entire industrial
sectors, with emphasis on both methodology and
results. |
|
5. |
Role of Public Policies
and Programs in Addressing Energy Use and Industrial
Competitiveness
Panel Leaders: John Nicol, Wisconsin Focus on Energy;
Raymond Monroe, Steel Founders' Society of America
Do industrial manufacturers need to learn how
to use new energy sources like hydrogen and biomass,
or will they just receive clean electricity through
the fence in the near future? This Panel will
focus on examples from around the world describing
public policies that promote energy development
and use (conventional and new sources) while enabling
or increasing the competitiveness of their industrial
sectors. |
|
6. |
Energy Efficiency in
Specific Industries
Panel Leaders: Michael Greenman, Glass Manufacturing
Industry Council
One of the challenges in deploying energy-efficient
technologies and programs for industry lies in
the diversity of its manufacturing facilities.
What are the issues unique (or common) to the
various manufacturing sub-sectors? How are individual
industries going about improving their efficiency
today? Panelists will discuss these questions
along with presenting the newest developments
in energy efficiency technologies unique to their
industry. |
