FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 5, 2005

Washington, D.C.-- With headlines full of dire warnings about high heating bills putting the squeeze on pocketbooks this winter, what's a consumer to do? First, take a deep breath and relax—ACEEE offers tips to help consumers save energy this winter and throughout the year. The new Consumer Guide: Condensed Online Version offers advice from ACEEE's popular book, Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings.

"The online guide has lots of energy-saving steps consumers can take now to save money on energy bills later," said Jennifer Thorne Amann, co-author of the Consumer Guide. "Many are do-it-yourself projects using inexpensive products available at most hardware stores, such as weatherstripping to reduce drafts and compact fluorescent lamps to replace inefficient incandescent bulbs." The online Consumer Guide details what homeowners and renters can do today and throughout the year to save energy and increase the comfort of their homes. The Checklist for Action is a great place to start.

Other quick-hit tips include:

  • Clean or replace furnace filters monthly
  • Get a tune-up for your heating system
  • Close your storm windows or install temporary shrink-wrap storm window kits
  • Set back you thermostat overnight and when you're away from home or install and set a programmable thermostat to do it for you
  • Seal seams and gaps in exposed ductwork, then insulate the ducts

The Consumer Guide: Condensed Online Version offers additional tips and more detailed information on heating and cooling systems, water heaters, windows, appliances, lighting, and much more.

Energy efficiency investments are not only good for the family budget, but they are also good for the health of the planet. "More than cutting our energy bills, saving energy helps protect our health and the environment by preventing air pollution that contributes to asthma and heart disease as well as global warming," added Bill Prindle, ACEEE Deputy Director.

The Consumer Guide: Condensed Online Version is featured on ACEEE's Web site at http://aceee.org/consumerguide/index.htm. Hard copies of the book can be ordered for $8.95 (plus shipping and handling) direct from ACEEE Publications. Bulk sales discounts are available from ACEEE—call (202) 429-0063 for bulk sales information.
